Uttarkashi (Hindi : उत्तरकाशी ) , which means Kashi in the north, is a holy city in Uttarakhand, India. It is the district headquarters of Uttarkashi district. Uttarkashi is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1352 m above sea level. Uttarkashi is home to several temples and ashrams and also to the Nehru Institute of mountaineering. The name of the city reflects its similarity and location (which is north of) the city of Kashi (Varanasi). Similar to Varanasi, the city is Uttarkashi Ganga, is the side of a hill named Varun Parvat at the confluence of two rivers Varuna and Asi, one called Manikarnika Ghat Ghat and the famous Vishwanath temple here is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Opposite the temple is unique Mahadev-ka-Vishal Trishul or trident of Shiva Grande, consists of eight major metals. It is believed that Lord Shiva killed Vakasur with this trident. Other important temples dedicated to Lord Parashuram, Lord Rudra Ekadashi and the goddess Kali.
